Managing the logistics of a voluminous product like pet beds, with 100% local production and accelerated growth, was an operational burden that the brand's small team could not assume without compromising product quality and customer service.

Going from importing ready-made products to producing locally in the middle of the pandemic added an additional layer of complexity that required an agile and trustworthy logistics partner.

Solución

With Cubbo, Camita Bienestar outsourced all the logistics of its pet beds, achieving fast deliveries throughout Mexico. This allowed the team to focus on quality local production and customer experience, knowing that the last mile was covered efficiently.

Michelle Reza is the founder of Camita Bienestar, together with her partner and best friend, Armando.

Together, they embarked on the adventure of producing beds for dogs and pets: a trending product that, beyond being a more than well-deserved gesture of affection for the furry friends who share our lives, is also extremely necessary from a health perspective for our animal companions.

Today, we spoke with Michelle to learn how they decided to create this venture, why they chose ecommerce, how and when they decided to produce 100% in Mexico, and why they joined forces with Cubbo to leave the logistics and delivery of our dogs’ wellbeing and rest in their hands.

Frank: How was Camita Bienestar born?

Michelle: Since I was a child, I always wanted to start something and have my own business.

It turns out that my best friend Armando, who is also my partner, already had experience with ecommerce stores.

So one day, while talking, we decided to start something together.

We tried to find something we were passionate about, especially me, because I was going to be the one dedicating more time to it.

That is where the idea of pet beds came from.

I have a dog, and when she was little, she had a bad experience. Another dog bit her, and after that she became anxious every time she saw other dogs.

At the same time, while we were looking for a business idea, we saw that beds helped dogs feel more comfortable, calmer, and have a better quality of life. They were also trending.

That is how the idea of creating Camita Bienestar was born.

Frank: When did Camita Bienestar start?

Michelle: It was born at the end of 2019, a little before the pandemic.

We are literally children of the pandemic.

Frank: Did you start as an ecommerce business or as a physical store?

Michelle: From the beginning, it was ecommerce.

We chose this channel because, at that time, I had what in Mexico is called a godín job, basically an office job, and my time was limited.

That is why, from the beginning, we thought of starting as an ecommerce business. A physical store requires much more time, and I could not dedicate that much time to it.

Frank: And how long did it take you to become operational?

Michelle: It took us about a month. That was the time we needed to prepare the material, set up the store, and receive the beds, because the first phase was to import the finished product and sell it.

That helped us bring the product quickly to the Mexican market, test it, and see if it really worked. Once we saw that it was working and that we were selling, we moved into a second phase: shifting production to Mexico.

That is why our beds are 100% Mexican. They are produced here, with Mexican materials, and made by Mexicans. We do absolutely everything locally.

Frank: In fact, we were going to ask you about that because your website prominently says “Proudly Made in Mexico.” Tell us a little about why you made that decision and what it represents for you.

Michelle: We made that decision because importing the products was too expensive and did not allow us to be competitive. But thanks to that situation, we decided to take a bet on Mexico.

And I say “take a bet” because, at the time we decided to produce locally, it was a risk. The pandemic was still at its peak, it was April or May 2020, and nobody knew exactly what was going to happen.

National production

All Camita Bienestar products are produced in Mexico. And the brand opted for it in the midst of the Covid crisis, as a way to provide employment during the pandemic, be more competitive and also improve quality.

That's when we made the decision to say “we're going to do everything at home.” And it represents that love and effort that we have put into the business, into our project. And the desire we had to provide employment to people in Mexico who also needed it very much at that time. During the pandemic many people lost their jobs and we are proud that we were able to help alleviate that burden a little, providing employment to families that needed it.

In addition to this, there is an undoubted improvement in quality that is also a consequence of producing in Mexico. Here we can completely review and control the type of material that is used, improve it, and adapt it. While when we bought abroad we were tied a little to what was available.

In fact, it only took us two months to import the product and then we decided that everything was our decision: Material, filling, what seam it had to have, etc. That is what it means to be made in Mexico.

Frank: How do you know how to design a pet bed?

Michelle:The design is not ours, but we can say what material it will have, what shapes, some minimal changes and the brand of the product and the values that we want the brand to have. Within this design process that we can do, we seek to greatly improve the components and facilitate hygiene and cleaning.

For example, many brands of pet beds on the market have only one piece. We want our beds to have two pieces, so that you can remove the donut and put it in the washing machine and it will fit perfectly. This is vital for the pet's hygiene and quality of life.

100% wellbeing

One of the keys to proper rest for dogs and pets is ensuring that their joints do not rest on hard surfaces.

That is why Camita Bienestar increased both the quantity and quality of the filling in its products, following recommendations from veterinarians.

_____________________

Another thing we do is consult with veterinarians to really know what types of designs and what things can help a puppy rest well. Part of what we have done in that sense is, for example, increasing the volume of filling in our beds, so that their joints do not suffer, and also increasing the height of the donut, because to rest well, dogs need their heads to be a little higher than the rest of their bodies. Our beds are designed so that the dog can adopt a more anatomically appropriate position that allows him to rest better.

These types of details are part of our dedication to offering a quality product that is also supervised by veterinarians who can guarantee that they are decisions and bed designs that are really good for our pets.

Frank: In addition to beds, they sell other products. How and why do you decide to expand?

Michelle: As the name Camita Bienestar says, from the beginning we wanted to give our pets the best rest possible. In this search for alternatives for the well-being of pets, we investigated what other areas are normally ignored by owners and discovered that many times we do not realize that their nose or pads become dry. And that hurts them.

That's why we wanted to add a product that helps them with this. A product that is also healthy for them. And the odor remover, an idea to improve the owner's quality of life. Because puppies sometimes smell strongly, due to the breed of the dog, and you can put the odor remover on the bed, in your living room or anywhere your dog usually stays.

Camita Bienestar and Cubbo, ready to bring rest to all of Mexico

Camita Bienestar currently distributes throughout Mexico, with the dream of expanding across Latin America and the United States. Its ally for that journey is Cubbo, and the way this alliance came about is another example of the noble and honest values that Michelle and her partner Armando have embedded in Camita Bienestar’s DNA.

Frank: How did you find Cubbo?

Michelle: In reality, Cubbo was the one that found us. Josu reached out at a stage when we were focused on improving the product rather than improving distribution. From that first approach, we really liked them and were very interested, but we felt we were not yet big enough to consider Cubbo as an option at that moment.

Time passed and, fortunately, thanks to all the work we have put into the business, Cubbo did become an option. Our logistics needs grew to a level where we felt comfortable looking for allies to take care of them. And we went straight to Cubbo because we already knew what they did and how they did it, but also as a way of thanking Josu for the gesture of approaching us first.

That is how we closed the deal with Cubbo.

Frank: Is there anything in particular you asked Cubbo for as a mandatory condition in order to work together?

Michelle: Yes, and they delivered. The only thing we still have some trouble with is the larger beds, because due to their size and the type of packaging we use, we still cannot ship them through Cubbo. But apart from that, we have done everything else, and they have delivered on what we asked for.

Everything we have discussed or brainstormed with Cubbo has been possible. So, so far, everything has been perfect.

Teamwork

For Michelle, one of the key parts of her alliance with Cubbo has been the ability to talk, discuss, and think as a team about ideas and logistics solutions that help her grow the project.

____________________________

Frank: In the near future, say next year, what are your plans?

Michelle: First, we would like to continue increasing sales volume. We also have a product innovation plan that goes beyond pain relief or odor control products. We are looking to develop beds that follow this same concept of providing wellbeing for our dogs, but with a more technical approach.

That is what we are working on: increasing sales volume and bringing new products to the table.

Frank: Michelle, to close, what advice would you give to a Mexican entrepreneur reading this right now?

Michelle: The main advice I would give is that you have to take the leap. You cannot start the business at 100%. You cannot wait until you think your product is 100% ready, with the perfect packaging, the perfect branding, and the perfect product. If you do that, you will never start.

You need to have a product you believe can sell, but you also need to take the risk and get started. You have to launch the product and take a certain risk, a calculated risk, but you have to do it.

Because if you wait for the product to be a star product from day one, that is not going to happen, and you will never get off the ground.
